At approximately 1:28 am (June 20th) Riverside Fire Department was dispatched to 925 Depot Street, Riverside Baptist Church, for a reported structure fire. Automatic Mutual Aid with Pell City Fire Department was initiated.
A defensive operation was established as fire had spread quickly throughout the building. Aerial operations began soon after first arriving units. Crews battled the fire through the entire night and into early dawn.
The fire is believed to have started from a passenger vehicle leaving the roadway and crashing into the basement of the church. One male was found deceased inside the vehicle. The identification of the male is unknown at this time.
Thank you to our Riverside firefighters, our neighbors at Pell City Fire Department, Riverside Police, SCCSO, St. Clair County Communications and our utilities crews that helped on scene.
Riverside Baptist Church has been a staple in our small town for decades and our thoughts and prayers are with them and the family of the deceased during this difficult time.

Isaiah 61:1-3
1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;
3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.

Be in prayer for Riverside Baptist Church.
Early this morning a car crashed into the basement and burst into flames. The driver was killed, and the fire consumed the entire building.
All that remains is the brick exterior.
Pray for the family of the person who was killed.
Pray for the church as they look to the future and plan to rebuild.
Pastor Ken Maddox said the church is unified and trusting God as they move forward.
Pray as they meet with their insurance company.
The Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions is delivering a check today to help with immediate needs.
And the city of Riverside will be providing space for the church to meet through the end of the year.
