Students from the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) organized a walkout on Friday, drawing dozens of people to the Wisconsin State Capitol to demand change.

The Madison community is continuing to heal following Monday’s tragedy at Abundant Life Christian School, which left a lasting impact on area students, staff, and teachers.

A sea of students was seen marching from West High School to the Capitol just after noon on Friday, chanting in unison.

Several speakers gathered on the Capitol steps to show their support for the Abundant Life Christian School community.

They also expressed alarm over the rising violence in schools around the country.

Abby Johns, a sophomore at ALCS, joined the walkout after hearing about it from a friend. She and her father participated in the event, not just to address the tragedy at her school but to speak out against the nationwide epidemic of school violence.

Jason Johns says the gathering was not about choosing sides or being right on issues.

The event was a healing experience for those impacted by the shooting.

“I saw a sign today that really hit me, and that was ‘graduations, not funerals’, And when your kids are saying that, we got to do something.”
