But this shocking arrest was only the beginning. What happened next would test their faith, their family, and the very idea of religious freedom. Do you think prayer should ever be treated as a crime? Drop your answer in the comments — we’ll be pinning one of the best responses below.

This story begins on the night of October 2, 2021. Pastor Bisht was hosting an all-night prayer service in his rented home in Baida Jhal village, Uttarakhand. Worship songs were rising. Prayers were being lifted. Then—suddenly—police arrived, a mob ready to strike. Without warning, they seized Pastor Bisht. His wife Tripti was taken too. Even their little daughter, Aradhana, was dragged away.

But the shock of that night was only the beginning…

The charge leveled against him was shocking: he was accused of conducting “illegal conversions,” luring poor villagers to Christianity with inducements. This was under the Uttarakhand Freedom of Religion Act of 2018, a law meant to punish conversions done by force, fraud, or inducement. But here’s the truth, verified by court records: no one ever came forward claiming they had been forced, bribed, or even approached. Still, Pastor Bisht was thrown into jail, his family was humiliated, and formal charges were filed.

The months turned into years. Stigma never left. Neighbors whispered. Jobs vanished. And every single day, the weight of uncertainty pressed down. In the middle of this ordeal, tragedy struck. Under the stress and grief of their situation, Pastor Bisht and Tripti lost their unborn child. In interviews with Morning Star News, Tripti shared how abandoned they felt. Yet even in their darkest valley, they clung to their faith in Christ.

Yet their darkest valley was not the end of the story…

This case quickly became more than just one man’s story. Since the Uttarakhand law came into force in 2018, dozens of Christians had been arrested, but not one had ever been acquitted. That meant Pastor Bisht’s trial became a test case. Could prayer meetings be treated as evidence of illegal conversions? Could accusations stand without a single witness or victim? Could a Christian in Uttarakhand realistically hope for justice under this law?

But this struggle was far from over…

For nearly four years, the case dragged on inside the Ramnagar court of Nainital District. The prosecution insisted that Pastor Bisht had lured villagers with promises. The defense argued there was no proof, no victims, and no crime. Finally, on September 17, 2025, Judicial Magistrate Anju delivered the long-awaited verdict.

And then—after nearly four years—the judge finally spoke…

In a ruling that stunned both the local community and the wider Christian world, Pastor Nandan Singh Bisht was acquitted of all charges. The judge pointed out the obvious: there was no evidence of inducement, no witnesses who claimed harm, and no grounds to criminalize a prayer gathering. The court affirmed it: holding worship meetings in your own home is not a crime. With that, the case was dismissed, and Pastor Bisht walked free.

This was no small victory. It was the first time since the law was enacted in 2018 that a Christian had been acquitted under the so-called “freedom of religion” act. Legal experts quickly called it a precedent. Police cannot continue filing cases without evidence. Courts must demand proof before convicting. And most importantly, the constitutional freedom to practice one’s faith must be upheld.

But the question remains—will this landmark ruling truly protect Christians across India, or will it be just one rare exception? Do you believe this ruling will protect other Christians from false accusations—or is it just one rare exception? Type “PROTECT” or “EXCEPTION” Let’s talk in the comments below.

From a biblical perspective, this story echoes Acts 5:41, where the apostles rejoiced that they were counted worthy to suffer for the name of Christ. Pastor Bisht and his family endured injustice, loss, and heartbreak. Yet in the end, truth triumphed and light overcame the darkness.
