Slovenian parliament approves recognition week after Spain, Ireland, and Norway do; opposition leader claims action ’causes long-term damage to Slovenia by supporting Hamas’
Slovenia’s parliament passed a decree recognizing a Palestinian state on Tuesday, following 3 other European countries’ recognition last week.
Slovenia has become the latest European country to take such action in reaction to the deadly Gaza war initiated by Hamas’ October 7 offensive against Israel, defying an opposition resolution to derail it.
Following a chaotic 6-hour parliament session, 52 of the 90 members voted in favor of the government’s decree to recognize a Palestinian state.
“Today’s recognition of Palestine as a sovereign and independent state sends hope to the Palestinian people in the West Bank and in Gaza.”
– Prime Minister Robert Golob posted on the government’s X account after the vote, while the Palestinian flag was raised in front of parliament.
The opposition boycotted the vote, with the exception of 1 lawmaker who attended but abstained.
Slovenia’s center-left government submitted a decree recognizing a Palestinian state for parliamentary approval last Thursday as part of efforts to end the war in Gaza as quickly as possible.
On Monday, the conservative opposition Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS), led by former Prime Minister Janez Jansa, launched a proposal for an advisory referendum on recognition.
It stated that Slovenia should follow the majority of EU member states in deciding that now is not the time for such a move.
The government’s recognition “causes long-term damage to Slovenia by supporting the terrorist organization Hamas,” SDS stated.
The party had planned to postpone the vote because the statute establishes a 30-day timetable for MPs to vote on a disputed bill.
At Tuesday’s session, 52 lawmakers rejected the opposition’s proposal for a referendum on the issue.
According to Palestinian authorities, Spain, Ireland, and Norway recognized a Palestinian state this week, bringing the total number of United Nations’ 193 member states to 145.
Slovenia acknowledges a Palestinian state within the borders established by a 1967 United Nations resolution or any future peace deal achieved by both parties.
Last week, Israel’s Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, stated that he hoped Slovenian lawmakers would reject recognizing a Palestinian state, saying that a yes vote would be a “reward” to Hamas for its October 7 atrocities, in which terrorists killed 1,200 people and kidnapped 251 more.
According to the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry, approximately 36,000 individuals have been killed or are assumed dead as a result of the fighting, while only about 24,000 have been identified at hospitals.
The figure, which cannot be verified, includes 15,000 terror agents Israel claims to have killed in battle.
Israel also claims to have killed over 1,000 terrorists within Israel on October 7.
294 soldiers were killed during the ground offensive against Hamas and border patrol operations.
A civilian contractor for the Defense Ministry was also slain in the Strip.
