Hundreds came out to the Sarver and Freeport areas to pay their respects to Corey Comperatore, the man who died shielding his family from gunfire at former President Donald Trump’s rally in Butler on Saturday
On Friday, a fire vehicle brought Corey Comperatore’s flag-draped casket to a Pennsylvania church for his funeral.
The former fire chief was shot and murdered when a shooter attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump last weekend.
Hundreds of firefighters arrived at the church in a parade of over 100 trucks to offer their support for Comperatore’s bereaved family and friends.
Outside the church, a large American flag hung from the fire truck’s ladder.
A sharpshooter team stationed on a nearby rooftop served as a reminder of last weekend’s violence.
Officials said Comperatore spent his final moments shielding his wife and children from gunshots at Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, last Saturday.
Trump, who was shot in the ear but was not seriously injured, will not attend the funeral due to Secret Service concerns.
Trump paid tribute to Comperatore during his speech Thursday night at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
He displayed Comperatore’s firefighting gear on the convention stage, kissing his helmet and hailing the ex-chief as “an unbelievable person.”
Comperatore, 50, was a project and tooling engineer, an Army reservist, and a volunteer firefighter for many years after retiring as chief, according to his obituary.
He and his family went to Cabot Methodist Church, where their pastor, Jonathan Fehl, presided over the burial ceremonies.
Comperatore was to be buried at Freeport, his hometown.
On Thursday, thousands of mourners filed into a banquet hall to pay their respects to Comperatore and his family. Hundreds of people gathered Wednesday at a vigil for him at an auto racing track.
During Comperatore’s visitation on Thursday, guests were shown a slideshow of photographs from his life, including his wedding, a recent 50th birthday party, time with his daughters, firefighting, fishing, and playing with his Dobermans.
A framed copy of a note to Comperatore’s wife signed by Trump and former First Lady Melania Trump was also on display
“Corey will forever be remembered as a True American Hero.”

Two others persons were injured at Trump’s rally: David Dutch, 57, of New Kensington, and James Copenhaver, 74, of Moon Township.
According to an Allegheny Health Network spokesperson, both were upgraded to serious but stable condition by Wednesday night.
