Out of a total of 30,530,157 votes counted, Pezeshkian, a heart surgeon, received 16,384,403 votes, while Jalili received 13,538,179 ballots.

The turnout rate was reported to be 49.8%.

Pezeshkian, 69, had served in the Iranian Parliament for 5 4-year terms.

He was also the vice speaker of Iran’s 10th parliament.

The president-elect was Iran’s health minister for 4 years under then-President Mohammad Khatami.

On June 28, Iran held an early election in which 4 candidates competed.

Masoud Pezeshkian and Saeed Jalili received more votes than other candidates; nonetheless, a runoff election was scheduled for a week later because none of the contenders received a majority of votes to become Iran’s president.

Masoud Pezeshkian, Iran’s reformist president-elect, says he will “extend the hand of friendship to everyone” in his first statement after winning a runoff election over ultraconservative Saeed Jalili.

“We will extend the hand of friendship to everyone; we are all people of this country; we should use everyone for the progress of the country.”
