Question #1. What kind of prayer is now unlawful in NSW?
The NSW Conversion Practices Ban Act 2024 makes it illegal to pray with or over someone in an attempt to change or suppress their sexual orientation or gender identity. Targeting a person this way is prohibited. Any prayer that tries to change someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity is considered illegal under the law.

Question #2. How does the law treat teaching about celibacy and abstinence?
General teaching about celibacy, abstinence, or religious principles is not unlawful. For example, rules for priests, monks, or nuns to remain celibate are allowed because they apply generally, not to a specific individual.

Question #3. What practices are still permitted?
So, what can faith leaders still do? They can teach or preach religious beliefs to a group, as long as it’s not aimed at changing someone’s identity. They can offer guidance, pastoral care, or prayer for comfort and reassurance. General statements about marriage, gender, sexuality, or celibacy can also be shared publicly.
