On July 4th, 2025, the Texas Hill Country experienced what experts called a ‘1,000-year flood.’

In Kerr County, the Guadalupe River rose 26 feet in just 45 minutes, reaching a record 37.52 feet.

Floodwaters surged into Camp Mystic, an all-girls Christian camp, overwhelming cabins along the river. Tragically, 27 campers and counselors lost their lives.

The Bible reminds us in Psalm 34:18: The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart,
And saves such as have a contrite spirit.

During those dark days, many families held tightly to that promise, finding comfort in God’s Word.

In September 2025, Camp Mystic leaders announced plans to reopen in summer 2026 at their Cypress Lake campus, which was spared from the flood. They also plan to welcome campers from the Guadalupe River site to Cypress Lake next summer, ensuring no child misses out on camp.

As details for 2026 registration are finalized, Camp Mystic will share how families can sign up and be part of the next chapter in this ministry.

The Guadalupe River site, where the tragedy occurred, will remain closed indefinitely. Camp leaders are carefully evaluating plans to rebuild the site in a way that ensures safety and honors those lost. A memorial will be built to honor the 27 lives lost.

However, some grieving families have expressed frustration, saying they were not consulted about the reopening plans. They feel the decision was made too soon.

In response to the tragedy, Texas lawmakers passed the ‘Heaven’s 27 Camp Safety Act’—named in memory of the 27 lives lost.

This law requires:

Stronger evacuation protocols

Floodplain restrictions for camp facilities

Improved communication systems with parents

Camp Mystic has promised to fully comply with these safety measures before reopening.

This act represents one of the most significant youth camp reforms in Texas history—born out of a heartbreaking tragedy.

Camp Mystic’s future now centers on the Cypress Lake campus. Leaders promise that campers will never stay in cabins that were touched by floodwaters—at Cypress Lake or when the Guadalupe River site eventually reopens.

Yet Camp Mystic is more than just its buildings. It is a place of laughter, friendship, and spiritual growth—a spiritual refuge for the next generation.

Romans 8:28 tells us: And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

The families of Camp Mystic are grieving, yet their faith has not drowned with the floodwaters. As they prepare to reopen in 2026, their story reminds us that even through pain, God is writing a greater plan.

Revelation 21:4 promises: And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.

Let us pray together—for the grieving families, the camp staff, and every child who will one day walk through the gates of Camp Mystic again.
