A tragic road accident has killed ‘Bishop’ Gilbert Deya and injured 30 others.
The accident occurred in the Namba-Kapiyo area and involved 3 vehicles: a Moi University school bus, a Toyota Fortuner owned by the County Government of Siaya, and a Toyota Noah.
According to Nyanza Traffic Commander Peter Maina, the driver of the Toyota Noah traveling from Kisian to Bondo lost control and collided with the school bus on its route to Kisumu.
The school bus driver swerved to avoid a head-on collision, but instead ended up rolling off the road.
The third vehicle, the Toyota Fortuner, which was following the bus, was struck in the process.
Maina reported that 15 students from the school bus were critically hurt, while another 15 got minor injuries.
The body of ‘Bishop’ Deya was taken to the Kombewa Sub-County Hospital mortuary.
Authorities have initiated investigations to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Deya gained national and worldwide attention in the late 1990s and early 2000s for his “miracle babies” claims.
He led Gilbert Deya Ministries, a ministry that claimed infertile women could conceive with prayer and divine intervention.
His ministry, based in the United Kingdom at the height of its popularity, faced major legal issues after being linked to a child trafficking ring.
Deya was accused of stealing children from hospitals and low-income families in Kenya and passing them off as miraculous babies to desperate couples.
He was extradited from the United Kingdom to Kenya in 2017 following a lengthy court fight and accused with multiple counts of child theft.
Though he denied all charges, the cases sparked a major legal and ethical debate, raising concerns about religious exploitation and accountability.
