A Muslim in Somalia was seriously injured this month after professing his faith in Christ, and he lost his wife and 5 children, according to sources.
Mohammad Abdul, 40, survived a knife attack by his Muslim family on the outskirts of Kismayo, a port city in southern Somalia’s Lower Juba area, on May 5, after converting to Christianity on Mar. 20.
The relatives abducted his wife and children while he was healing at a medical clinic, according to a source whose identity has been suppressed for security reasons.
The attack resulted in a deep cut on Abdul’s head and a fractured hand.
According to the source, he has relocated to another place in Somalia due to concerns for his safety.
Abdul began praying and studying the Bible with his family and a Christian leader every evening after being converted to Christ in March by a Somali preacher living outside of Somalia.
When Abdul’s youngest child, 5, disclosed the meetings to a neighbor, his wife advised the visiting pastor to leave for his own safety.
After departing on April 11, Abdul informed the pastor that his Muslim relatives were sending him frightening text messages, he said.
Abdul added that as his wife became more afraid of relatives and stopped attending Christian services, he continued to pray alone.
The Muslim relatives arrived at his house on the evening of May 5, about 7:30 PM East Africa Time, he added.
He claimed that one of his relatives used a sharp knife to strike him.
He requested prayer that God provide for his family, with whom he continues to communicate.
According to the U.S. State Department, Somalia’s constitution defines Islam as the national religion and prohibits the spread of any other faith.
It also mandates that laws adhere to sharia (Islamic law) principles, with no exceptions made for non-Muslims.
The death punishment for apostasy is included in Islamic law, according to mainstream schools of Islamic jurisprudence.
Al Shabaab, an Islamic extremist group in Somalia, is affiliated with Al Qaeda and follows its teachings.
