The Canaan Baptist Church family of faith is profoundly saddened to announce the
passing of our beloved Pastor Emeritus, the Reverend Doctor Gus Roman, who entered eternal
rest on Wednesday, April 23 rd, 2025.
Pastor Roman faithfully and tirelessly served the Canaan congregation across two
distinguished tenures, from 1967 to 1980 and from 1993 to 2006. Throughout his twenty-six
years of devoted leadership, Canaan was blessed to witness remarkable growth in local and
global missions, ministries, discipleship, and community engagement.
In 1970, under Pastor Roman’s visionary leadership, our growing congregation relocated
from “Little Canaan” at Haines Street and Belfield Avenue to our current edifice, and, through
God’s provision and Pastor Roman’s stewardship, the mortgage was retired within three years.
His anointed preaching, compassionate pastoral care, and unwavering commitment to the
advancement of God’s Kingdom have left an indelible impact on countless lives in Philadelphia
and throughout the world.
Pastor Roman was also a spiritual father and mentor to Pastor Derick Brennan,
prayerfully preparing and presenting him to the congregation as his successor, with the
affirmation of the Canaan family.
Alongside his beloved wife, Mrs. Eunice Roman, their children, and grandchildren, Pastor
Roman’s legacy of faith, leadership, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who
were blessed to know him and through the ongoing ministry of Canaan Baptist Church.
We ask that you pray for an outpouring of God’s love, strength, and peace upon the
Roman Family and all who are experiencing the pain of his passing.
