According to a new Pew Research Center survey, nearly half of Americans believe God does not get involved in presidential elections, and 1 in 7 say they do not believe in God at all. Only a small minority see election results as God’s approval of a candidate. This study reveals deep divisions in how faith and politics intersect in the United States.

In September 2025, the Pew Research Center released a groundbreaking survey revealing that most Americans do not believe God played a role in recent presidential elections.
The survey, conducted in May 2025 with nearly 9,000 US adults, provided a number of key findings:
49% believe God does not get involved in elections.
14% say they do not believe in God at all.
Only a small minority attribute the outcomes to God’s approval: 4% see President Trump’s 2024 win as God’s approval, and 2% say the same about President Biden’s 2020 victory.
33% believe election results are part of God’s plan—but not necessarily an endorsement.
56% say religion plays little or no role in how they vote.
Among US Christians, 80% believe that good Christians can disagree about President Trump, while 11% believe opposing him is necessary, and 7% say supporting him is vital.
Overall, this research shows that while faith is personally important for many Americans, the majority—56% of Americans—say religion plays little to no role in their vote, while only 25% see the presidential elections as directly influenced by God.
These findings raise important questions: Should faith guide politics, or should religion and governance remain separate?
