Rev. James Morris Lawson Jr., an apostle of nonviolent protest who taught activists how to deal with savage reactions as the Civil Rights Movement gathered pace, died on Monday, according to his family.
He was 95.
Lawson died on Sunday in Los Angeles following a brief illness, according to his family.
He had spent decades as a preacher, labor movement organizer, and university lecturer there.
Lawson was a close adviser to Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., who referred to him as “the leading theorist and strategist of nonviolence in the world.”
Lawson met King in 1957, having spent 3 years in India learning about Mohandas K. Gandhi’s independence movement.
2 years later, King would travel to India for the first time, although he had only read about Gandhi in literature.
The 2 pastors, both 28 years old, instantly bonded over their enthusiasm for the Indian leader’s beliefs, and King urged Lawson to implement them in the American South.
