In a strongly worded letter, Rev Dr Titus Chung, Bishop of Singapore and Primate of the Province of the Anglican Church in South East Asia, expressed “unease and reservation” over the appointment of Dame Sarah Mullally.
He highlighted her leadership in the Living in Love and Faith project, which led to the 2023 decision to bless same-sex marriages in the Church of England. Bishop Chung said this was a departure from Scripture and traditional Anglican orthodoxy and noted that, under God’s guidance, they will not recognize her as ‘first amongst equals’ within the Global Anglican Communion.
Similarly, the Global South Fellowship of Anglican Churches (GSFA), led by Most Rev Dr Justin Badi Arama, emphasized that the appointment was a missed opportunity to reunite and reform the Anglican Communion. They argued that compromising Scripture on marriage and sexuality poses serious challenges for the unity of global Anglicanism.
Both leaders called for prayer and discernment, urging orthodox Anglican provinces to remain rooted in Scripture and committed to the principles of faith. The GSFA even offered a framework for covenanted relationships among orthodox provinces to restore clarity, confidence, and unity in the Communion.
