A Southern Baptist pastor from Greensboro, North Carolina, was indicted on Tuesday in federal district court in New York City with falsifying documents in a sexual abuse case as part of the Justice Department’s investigation into the country’s largest Protestant denomination.

The indictment is the first filed against a Southern Baptist Convention institution, which federal prosecutors have been investigating since August 2022, following the discovery of hundreds of abuse instances within the denomination.

In March, the interim president of the church’s executive committee stated that no indictments of the governing body were expected, although several institutions were still under investigation.

Today’s indictment involved a former administrator and lecturer at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (SWBTS) in Fort Worth, TX.

According to media sources, Matthew Queen, who has been senior pastor at Friendly Avenue Baptist Church, Greensboro, NC since March of this year, formerly served as interim provost at SWBTS, where he also lectured.

According to the seminary, he left the school in 2023 after being suspended.

“All employees alleged to have acted improperly in this matter are no longer employed by the seminary,” the SWBTS stated.

Mr. Queen, according to the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, was charged with falsifying documents in connection with notes submitted to the FBI, as well as obstructing the investigation.
