South African President Cyril Ramaphosa was reelected by lawmakers on Friday after his African National Congress (ANC) party reached a dramatic late coalition agreement with the main opposition party and others to secure a second term in office.
Ramaphosa won convincingly in a parliamentary vote over a surprise contender, Julius Malema, the head of the far-left Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
Ramaphosa received 283 votes to Malema’s 44 in the 400-member House.
Ramaphosa, 71, won his second term with the aid of members from the second-largest Democratic Alliance (DA) party and others after the ANC lost its 30-year parliamentary majority in a historic election 2 weeks ago.
The ANC reached an agreement with the DA, once its fiercest political opponent, just hours before the vote for president, assuring Ramaphosa’s return as leader of Africa’s biggest industrialized economy.
South Africa’s first national coalition, with no party holding a majority, will now govern co-govern South Africa.
The deal, referred to by parties as a government of national unity, puts the ANC together in government with the DA, a white-led party that had long been the principal opposition and the main rival forthe ANC.
At least 2 more minor parities are also involved in the agreement, which puts South Africa into uncharted waters.
The agreement became imperative after the ANC lost its 30-year dominance in a humiliating national election last month.
It was a watershed moment for Africa’s biggest industrialized economy.
The ANC is Nelson Mandela’s party, and it has governed with a strong majority since 1994, when the apartheid system of white minority rule ended.
That three-decade dominance came to an end in the May 29 election, when the ANC’s share of the vote fell to 40% due to South Africans’ displeasure with high levels of poverty, inequality, and unemployment.
Analysts warn that the ANC, a former liberation movement, and the centrist, business-friendly DA — the 2 largest parties and crucial participants — may face challenges due to their dramatically different ideologies.
The DA received 21% of the vote in the national election, the second highest share.
For starters, the DA disagreed with the ANC government’s decision to accuse Israel of genocide in Gaza in a highly sensitive lawsuit before the United Nations’ highest court.
The DA supported Ramaphosa, 71, under the agreement, and because the 2 parties have a clear joint majority of seats in Parliament, Ramaphosa’s reelection was assured.
