On June 25, 2025, Pakistan’s Supreme Court acquitted Anwar Kenneth, a 72-year-old Christian who had been on death row for 23 years for alleged blasphemy.

A three-judge court ruled that Kenneth was not legally responsible for blasphemy due to mental health issues.

His death sentence, imposed in July 2002 and upheld in June 2014, was based on letters he sent rejecting Prophet Muhammad’s prophethood, which the court now views as non-blasphemous due to mental incapacity.

According to the Supreme Court, individuals with severe mental disorders cannot be held criminally liable under Pakistani law.

This is believed to be the first such acquittal under blasphemy laws based on mental health, perhaps setting a precedent for other mentally ill detainees.
