Criminal Sexual Conduct Arrest

On Thursday, June 20 in the early morning hours, we were made aware of an incident of improper touching between a teacher and student from Calvin Christian High School. Later that day the suspect was taken into custody. The Kent County Prosecutor’s Office authorized the following charges:
• Criminal Sexual Conduct 4th Degree (2 counts)

The suspect, Michael Hoekwater, aged 57, was arraigned on June 21. The next court appearance is scheduled for Monday, July 1 at 1:30 pm, in the 59th District Court.

While this appears to be an isolated incident, if there are any additional victims they are encouraged to contact the proper authorities.

A Calvin Christian High School, Grandville, MI teacher has been charged with inappropriately touching a student.

Grandville Police said they received a call Thursday morning regarding the incident involving the student and 57-year-old Michael Hoekwater.

Officers arrested Hoekwater some hours later.

On Friday, he was charged with 2 counts of 4th-degree criminal sexual conduct.

The charges allege that Hoekwater used his position as a teacher to force or pressure the student into sexual relations.

Investigators said it appears to be an isolated event, but anyone who believes they are a victim of Hoekwater should contact Grandville Police at (616) 538-6110 or Silent Observer at (616) 774-2345.

In response to questions from FOX 17, Calvin Christian Schools issued us a letter, which was distributed to parents today.

In the communication, the high school’s top administrator states that Hoekwater “crossed professional boundaries toward a high school student.”

According to the district, Hoekwater is on administrative leave pending the legal process and an internal investigation.

We are writing today to inform you of difficult news. We recently received a report that a high school teacher, Mike Hoekwater, crossed professional boundaries toward a high school student. Mr. Hoekwater has been placed on administrative leave while we investigate, in cooperation with law enforcement and other authorities.

It is understandable that people may want to know more specific details; however, due to both student and employee privacy considerations, we cannot comment further on this matter at this time.

Hoekwater may face up to 2 years in prison if convicted.

His next court date is scheduled for June 21.
