Pastor Immanuel Vimal Raj, 35, has been arrested for the murder of his wife Vaishali Vimal Raj in Kancheepuram.
Family complaints indicated a pattern of dowry demands and abuse. The faked death resulted in murder charges and a post-mortem at Chengalpet Hospital.
A 35-year-old pastor was arrested in Kancheepuram on charges of strangling his wife to death after a fight and then claiming it was a natural death.
He even planned a funeral in Ottiambakkam village, Kancheepuram district, Tamil Nadu, India on Sunday, but police called it off when the victim’s Mumbai-based brother filed a complaint with the state DGP.
The victim’s family in Mumbai were aware of the couple’s recent domestic issues.
They then filed an email complaint with the DGP, requesting that the funeral be halted.
The accused, Vimal Raj, was arrested on murder charges on Tuesday after the body was recovered and sent for post-mortem.
Police said Vimal Raj, 35, married Vaishali, 33, 2 years ago, and the couple has an 11-month-old daughter.
They met 4 years ago while the pastor was working in Mumbai.
However, shortly after the wedding, Vimal Raj allegedly started demanding money and physically torturing his wife.
According to authorities, he was furious because she had given birth to a girl.
Every other day, the pastor would quarrel with his wife.
After an altercation on Sunday, Vimal Raj suffocated her with a pillow.
He informed his family and Vaishali’s relatives that she had fallen and collapsed in the house.
He rushed her to the hospital and was pronounced dead there, he added.
He took the body to Ottiambakkam village, where his family lives, and attempted to bury it before Vaishali’s relatives arrived for the last rites.
He explained that Vaishali had a disease, and her body was rapidly deteriorating and needed to be buried.
However, the victim’s brother sent an email to the DGP’s office, stating that they suspected foul play in his sister’s death and that the burial should not take place without them.
Tambaram police commissionerate was notified of the complaint, and Thazhambur police filed a case of suspicious death and recovered the woman’s body for post-mortem.
The pastor was questioned about his wife’s death, and while he originally claimed innocence, he eventually conceded that it was a murder, authorities said.
Police changed the charge to murder and arrested Vimal on Tuesday morning.
Vaishali’s body was taken to Chengalpet Government Hospital for post-mortem.
