Zakir Hussain, the legendary tabla player and multiple Grammy award winner, is in critical condition and has been admitted to the hospital after suffering “serious” heart-related ailmentslate Sunday evening, according to several media reports.
His manager, Nirmala Bachani, confirmed that he had been admitted to a hospital in San Francisco, CA.
“He is still alive. Please, I request you to pray for him. I am in touch with the family,” Zakir Hussain’s sister Khurshid Aulia was quoted saying.
She added that her brother was “very critical, but he is still breathing”.
Although an official statement from Zakir Hussain’s family or the hospital has yet to be issued, Union Ministers and Chief Ministers have paid tribute to the tabla player on X.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, which had previously posted about the artist’s death on X, then deleted it.
Zakir Hussain, the Bombay-born eldest son of famed tabla player Allah Rakha, followed in his father’s footsteps and rose to prominence in India and around the world.
The musician has collaborated with a number of well-known international and Indian artists, but it was his 1973 musical project with English guitarist John McLaughlin, violinist L Shankar, and percussionist TH ‘Vikku’ Vinayakram that combined Indian classical and jazz elements in an unprecedented way.
The drummer, one of India’s most renowned classical musicians, was awarded the Padma Shri in 1988, the Padma Bhushan in 2002, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2023.
