Trump vowed months ago on the campaign trail that he would not tax service industry tips.

Critics and conservatives are accusing Vice President Kamala Harris of “copying” former President Trump’s campaign promise not to tax service industry employees’ tips, following the Biden-Harris administration’s announcement of a proposal to reduce waiter tips.

​​”It is my promise to everyone here when I am president we will continue to fight for working families, including to raise the minimum wage and eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers.”

Trump promised earlier this summer that if re-elected to the presidency, he would eliminate taxes on service industry tips, and the promise was included in the GOP platform for 2024.

“This is the first time I’ve said this and for those hotel workers and people that get tips, you’re going to be very happy, because when I get to office we are going to not charge taxes on tips, people making tips… It’s been a point of contention for years and years and years, and you do a great job of service, you take care of people, and I think it’s going to be something that really is deserved.”

Harris’s decision to join Trump in advocating for the elimination of the tip tax comes after the Biden administration implemented a voluntary tip reporting system for industry workers last year in an effort to streamline tip tax compliance.
