A major ruling out of California is putting public prayer back in the spotlight.
On Monday, U.S. District Judge Jesus Bernal ruled that the Chino Valley Unified School District cannot reopen its board meetings with prayer, marking the second time he has issued this ban.
Back in 2016, Judge Bernal blocked prayers that often referenced Jesus and Scripture, saying they violated the Constitution’s Establishment Clause. That decision was upheld by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in 2018.
Now, nearly a decade later, the school board tried to bring back those prayers, arguing they were voluntary and ceremonial, similar to prayers in Congress or city councils.
The judge rejected that defense, stating that school board meetings involve students and school matters, making official prayer in this context unconstitutional government endorsement.
The ruling means prayers before board meetings remain banned, at least for now.
The district can appeal to the Ninth Circuit and potentially even the U.S. Supreme Court, a move some Christian advocates are pushing, especially after the Supreme Court sided with a praying football coach in 2022.
Supporters say this is about freedom to express faith. Critics say it is about keeping government neutral.
Either way, this ruling highlights the ongoing tension between faith and the law, and the challenge of standing boldly for Christ in public spaces.

Now we want to hear from YOU:
Do you believe faith should have a place in public schools, or should prayer be kept out entirely?
Type PRAYER if you stand for faith, or type BAN if you believe in strict separation.
Your comment could inspire other Christians to think deeper about freedom of faith.
