CHRISTIAN BREAKING NEWS: “African Christians are Wasting Too Much Time in Benny Hinn Miracle Meetings”: Pastor Martin Ssempa, Makerere Community Church, Kampala, Uganda [#MartinSsempa]
Pastor Martin Ssempa of Makerere Community Church in Kampala, Uganda, has sparked debate with his bold statement: “African Christians are wasting too much time in Benny Hinn miracle meetings.” In a viral video, Ssempa questions the hours believers spend at healing crusades, urging them to evaluate the spiritual and practical impact of such gatherings.
Hi everyone.
Pastor Martin Ssempa is a Ugandan pastor and public figure—born in 1968—who holds dual Ugandan and American citizenship. He often comments on religious and social issues affecting African Christians and beyond.
He has stated that African Christians are wasting too much time attending Benny Hinn miracle meetings. At least 3 hours after work, but 12 hours with no work is excessive.
Here’s an excerpt from what he recently said on social media:
We’re spending way too much time in events and spending very little time in productive work. That’s what’s wrong with us in Africa.
We’ve just spent about four days watching this concert of Benny Hinn, brought together to Uganda by Pastor Robert Kayanja. It ended up being this highly placed event of a revival.
Now, I don’t mind revival. I’m happy for them. I’m happy for prayer meetings. I’m happy for preaching meetings. But my God, 12 hours a day, people waking up from morning up to late at night, sitting.
And even Benny Hinn himself asked, why do you wake up so early standing in these long lines in the sun? What are you doing?
It’s like you’re hungry for the Holy Spirit. That’s true. People are hungry for God. But I think subjecting our people to endless hours, sitting is disrespectful. Dishonorable.
So should we stop meetings? No, we shouldn’t. But I think we should reduce the amount of time that we take from people.
Even President Museveni, I remember saying that you people are there praying, praying, praying all the time. Yeah, prayer is important. But we can’t be always gathering to spend time in the meetings. Who’s going to plant the crops, who’s going to treat the people in the hospitals? So I think there is need to show that we all win.
In some sense, we should do an audit one year later after Benny Hinn, came to Uganda. What did we really gain as a country?
Let’s grow people’s faith, but let’s make some changes. Let’s not exploit people, putting them in the sun for such a long time, that they’re not working or doing that. It’s so long. Let’s do things shorter.
But I think we can build a better country, a better nation where we we have people working, people enjoying the good life and praising God if they spend a few hours in the church and hours working.
I mean, God put us on the earth to take care of the Garden of Eden. We can’t just be spending time in praying, praising, and nobody’s taking care of managing the garden.
