A New Zealand woman has been charged for allegedly continuing to sell unsafe fruit juice despite a food recall issued by the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI).
Riiria Jade Tatana, 44, the director of Fruit Box, is facing 4 charges for allegedly violating the Food Act between April 2023 and February 2025.
The charges were brought by the MPI after Tatana allegedly continued to sell unpasteurized fruit juice despite being instructed to stop by New Zealand Food Safety in April 2024.
If proven guilty, she faces up to 2 years in prison or a maximum fine of New Zealand $75,000.
Anyone who purchased fruit juice from Our Fruit Box was advised to throw it away since it could have included infections such as E.coli, salmonella, or norovirus, which could cause illness.
She has said and I quote:
“We’re going to continue doing what we’re doing whether they like it or not.”
“God is my boss, not MPI.”
“Until someone does get sick and they can prove it’s from our product, I won’t stop.”
