Gaines is a Christian, and she has stated that her faith influences her activism.

Gaines married University of Kentucky swimmer Louis Barker in 2022, following a three-year relationship.

Gaines endorsed Republican Ron DeSantis for the 2024 US presidential election.

Following the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, she expressed her support for his candidacy.
