Bishop Calvin Wallace Woods, Sr. (1933–2025) was a fearless civil rights leader, pastor, and servant of God who dedicated his life to justice, equality, and faith. From co-founding the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights to marching alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., his voice helped shape history in Birmingham and beyond.
In this video, we honor his legacy of faith and activism, his lifelong fight against segregation, and his powerful impact on future generations.

Bishop Woods combined faith with activism, creating a lasting impact on Birmingham and beyond.
He was born in September 13, 1933 at Birmingham, Alabama. He was the son of a minister. He earned multiple theology degrees and became pastor at the age of 27.
Bishop Woods co-founded the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights (1956), alongside Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth and his brother Abraham Woods Jr.
He was arrested and beaten during protests and led boycotts, marches, and voter registration drives.
He participated in the 1963 March on Washington.
Bishop Woods served as pastor of East End Baptist Church and later, Shiloh Baptist Church.
He was President of Birmingham’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference (2006–2021+), and led New Era Baptist State Convention.
Bishop Woods, who is remembered as a civil rights giant, was honored with a historical marker in Kelly Ingram Park.
He passed on August 15, 2025 at the of age 91.
