CHRISTIAN BREAKING NEWS: Southern Baptists Pass Resolution Opposing IVF at Annual Convention in Indianapolis, IN
At its annual meeting, the Southern Baptist Convention has approved a resolution against in vitro fertilization (IVF).
The resolution asked its supporters to only support reproductive methods that recognize the “unconditional value and right to life of every human being, including those in embryonic stage” and opposed IVF.
The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) is the largest Protestant denomination in the United States.
The association represents 47,000 Baptist church and has nearly 13 million members.
They had their convention in Indianapolis this year.
The IVF proposal demonstrates the success of a church faction’s campaign to promote more conservative measures following the Supreme Court’s rejection of Roe v Wade, which secured women the right to abortion nationwide.
The nonbinding resolution described IVF as “dehumanizing” and urged the government to “restrain” the practice.
The SBC describes resolutions as an opportunity for convention members to “express a consensus statement on timely public issues,” despite the fact that they are not enforceable rules.
The vote follows a February court judgment in Alabama, which declared that frozen embryos are considered infants.
At the time, that led to at least 3 IVF clinics pausing treatment and caused some political pressure for Republicans who backed the endeavor.
State legislators then passed a bill to protect IVF clinics and doctors from litigation and criminal prosecution.
