US President Joe Biden delivers remarks from Normandy, France on the 80th anniversary of D-Day – honoring all those who bravely served and sacrificed for our liberty and prosperity.
The Normandy landings were the landing operations and associated airborne operations carried out by the Allied invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord on Tuesday, June 6, 1944 during World War II.
Operation Neptune, also known as D-Day, was the greatest seaborne invasion in history.
The operation launched the liberation of France and the rest of Western Europe, laying the groundwork for the Allies’ victory on the Western Front.
The planning for the operation began in 1943.
In the months leading up to the invasion, the Allies carried out a major tactical deception called Operation Bodyguard to deceive the Germans about the date and location of the main Allied landings.
The weather on the day chosen for D-Day was not ideal, and the operation had to be postponed 24 hours; another postponement would have meant a delay of at least 2 weeks, as the planners had requirements for the phase of the moon, tides, and time of day, which meant only a few days each month were deemed suitable.
In preparation for an invasion, Adolf Hitler assigned Field Marshal Erwin Rommel leadership of German forces and began building fortifications along the Atlantic Wall.
Major General Dwight D. Eisenhower was appointed by US President Franklin D. Roosevelt to head Allied forces.
The invasion began shortly after midnight on June 6, with considerable aerial and naval bombardment, as well as an airborne assault involving 24,000 American, British, and Canadian parachute forces.
The early morning aerial assault was quickly followed by Allied amphibious assaults on the coast of France around 06:30.
The intended 50-mile (80-kilometer) stretch of Normandy coastline was separated into 5 sectors: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword.
Strong winds blew the landing craft east of their intended locations, especially in Utah and Omaha.
The Marines landed under heavy fire from gun emplacements overlooking the beaches, and the shore was mined and littered with impediments including wooden stakes, metal tripods, and barbed wire, making beach-clearing teams’ jobs tough and dangerous.
The highest number of casualties occurred at Omaha, which had towering cliffs.
Several fortified towns in Gold, Juno, and Sword were cleared by house-to-house battle, and 2 important gun emplacements at Gold were damaged using specialized tanks.
Aside from establishing beachheads on the first day, the Allies did not achieve any of their key objectives.
Carentan, Saint-Lô, and Bayeux remained in German control, and Caen, a crucial target, was not seized until July 21.
Only 2 of the beaches (Juno and Gold) were linked on the first day, and all 5 beachheads were not connected until June 12.
However, the operation gathered traction, which the Allies gradually increased over the next few months.
German casualties on D-Day are believed to be between 4,000 and 9,000 troops.
At least 10,000 Allied casualties were documented, including 4,414 verified deaths.
