CHRISTIAN BREAKING NEWS: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Signs Law Banning Religious Organizations Associated with Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine
On August 24, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a law banning Russian-affiliated religious organisations from operating in Ukraine.
The law was also featured in the official legislative journal Holos Ukrainy (Voice of Ukraine).
The law’s objective is to ban the activities of the Russian Orthodox Church and religious organizations linked with it in Ukraine, as well as the propagation of the “Russian world” ideology through religious organizations.
The law takes effect on the day following its publication.
On August 20, the Verkhovna Rada passed a bill outrightly prohibiting Russian-linked religious organizations in Ukraine, potentially crippling the activities of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP).
In January 2023, the government introduced bill No. 8371 in the Verkhovna Rada, which would prohibit religious organizations in Ukraine and potentially lead to the termination of the UOC-MP.
On October 19, 2023, the Verkhovna Rada passed the law on its first reading.
On July 23, MPs blocked the Verkhovna Rada’s position because they refused to discuss the billprohibiting UOC-MPs, disrupting the plenary session.
