President Biden decried acts of violence against political officials in a rare address from the Oval Office, one day after the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
“It’s time to cool it down. We all have a responsibility to do that,” Biden said.
US President Joe Biden urged Americans on Sunday to reject political violence and recommit to resolving their differences peacefully, saying the 2024 presidential election will be a “time of testing” in the aftermath of former US President Donald Trump’s attempted assassination.
In a prime-time national address from the Oval Office, Biden stated that political passions can be strong, but “we must never descend into violence.”
The president stated that his party and the Republicans can compete aggressively over differing policy agendas, but they must do so civilly.
“All of us now face a time of testing as the election approaches. There is no place in America for this kind of violence — for any violence. Ever. Period. No exception. We can’t allow this violence to be normalized.”

Biden spoke for 6 minutes in his 3rd national address since a shooter wounded Trump, murdered 1 rallygoer, and badly injured 2 others on Saturday evening.
His warning came only hours after FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate stated that agents have detected an increase in violent speech online following the attack at the Trump rally.
Since the incident, the president and his administration have been grappling with how to calibrate the political road forward following the weekend attack on the same person Biden is attempting to beat in the November election.
Biden strongly condemned the attack, but said he intends to continue pushing his campaign message and has “no doubt” Republicans would do the same when the Republican National Convention opens in Milwaukee on Monday.
He underlined that any disagreements must be peaceful.
Earlier Sunday, Biden was briefed in the White House Situation Room and condemned the attempted assassination of President Trump as “contrary to everything we stand for as a nation.”
He stated that he was directing an independent security review into how such an incident could have occurred.
The president also stated that he has asked the US Secret Service to assess all security arrangements for the Republican National Convention.
Hours later, Audrey Gibson-Cicchino, the Secret Service’s convention coordinator, said the weekend attack on Trump did not need any adjustments to the agency’s security strategy for the event, and officers “are fully prepared.”
Biden vowed a “thorough and swift” investigation and urged the public not to “make assumptions” about the shooter’s motivations or affiliations.
The president said he and first lady Jill Biden were praying for the family of Corey Comperatore, a former fire chief who was shot and killed at a Trump event in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday night.
“He was protecting his family from the bullets. God love him.”

The president also stated that he had a “short but good conversation” with Trump in the hours following the shootings and is “sincerely grateful” that the former President is “doing well and recovering.”
Following Biden’s speech, Trump, who has called for national resilience since the shooting, said on his social media account, “UNITE AMERICA!”
