CHRISTIAN BREAKING NEWS: Who is Rev. Kenneth Flowers? Senior Pastor, Greater New Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, Detroit, MI | Charged with Sexual Assault of a Minor [#KennethFlowers #RevKennethFlowers]

A prominent Detroit pastor has been charged with sexually assaulting a minor in Farmington Hills, allegedly in December.

The Rev. Kenneth Flowers, 63, pastor of Detroit’s Greater New Mount Moriah Baptist Church, was charged Friday in Farmington Hills District Court.

According to court records, Flowers remained silent and pleaded not guilty.

He was released on a $25,000 personal recognizance bond, which means he did not have to post cash or a bond, but if he does not present for future proceedings in the case, he will owe the court $25,000.

The maximum penalty for unlawful sexual conduct is 15 years in jail, whereas the maximum sentence for sexual assault is 10 years.

According to police and court documents, Flowers perpetrated the alleged assault on December 20, 2023, and was arrested the same day.

Court papers and a source familiar with the case indicate that the incident involved a 17-year-old man who resided in Flowers’ Farmington Hills neighborhood.

More information about what Flowers is accused of doing will be revealed on August 7 at a scheduled preliminary examination, unless Flowers chooses to forgo the proceeding.

A preliminary examination is when prosecutors present some of their most compelling evidence, which may include witness testimony, against someone accused of a crime.

If a judge believes that there is sufficient evidence to go to trial, the case is sent to circuit court, where a judge or jury will hear testimony, review evidence, and reach a verdict.

Flowers has been pastor of Greater New Mount Moriah since 1995, when he succeeded the iconic Rev. Benjamin Hooks, the NAACP’s longstanding executive director.

The church’s website lists 1,000 members and promotes Flowers as “a community/social activist for human rights issues” with an international reputation.

He is so well regarded that in 2019, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan appointed him to the city’s Board of Ethics.

He did not serve long since he was declared unfit to serve once it was discovered he lived in Farmington Hills.

Flowers was well-known for his outreach to leaders of other faiths, and his church’s website claims he was the “first Pastor ever at Greater New Mt. Moriah to license and ordain females to the preaching ministry and to ordain females as Deacons.”

According to the church’s website, Flowers’ gala to celebrate 25 years of preaching the gospel was “featured in Jet Magazine” and attended by Mrs. Coretta Scott King, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, the Reverend Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks, Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, and Detroit Mayor Kwame M. Kilpatrick. Tavis Smiley, a well-known TV and radio personality, made a video tribute to his friend.
