It is with an extremely heavy heart that the Connecticut State Police announces the passing of Dr. Reverend Paul Krampitz, a Connecticut State Police Chaplain. Chaplain Krampitz was tragically killed in a fatal motor vehicle accident on Route 9 in Berlin yesterday, 09/18/24. The accident remains an active and ongoing investigation, the other operator involved in the accident has been identified and is currently cooperating with Troopers.
Dr. Reverend Paul Krampitz was appointed by Commissioner John A. Danaher III, on July 3, 2008, as a CT State Police Chaplain.
Chaplain Krampitz was assigned to Troop L (Litchfield), H (Hartford), and DESPP Headquarters in Middletown. Chaplain Krampitz touched the lives of hundreds of Troopers, Dispatchers, and support staff in his 16 years of service.
Chaplain Krampitz was a pillar to our agency following the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting and navigated our agency through dozens of Critical Incident Stress Management debriefings. Often sought after by Troopers, Command Staff, and Chaplains for spiritual support, counsel, mentorship, and guidance; Chaplain Krampitz was a reputable and respected member of our agency.
Pastor Paul Krampitz is a graduate of Yale Divinity School and Hartford Seminary, where he received his Doctor of Ministry degree. He also completed a year of study at the Lutheran School of Theology at Philadelphia. Before being called to Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell, he served congregations in Connecticut and Rhode Island. Pastor Paul is a past Dean of the Southern CT and Central CT Conferences and served on the New England Synod Council and Candidacy Committee. Pastor Paul also serves as a Chaplain for Luther Ridge of Middletown and the Cromwell Police and Fire Departments.
Chaplain Krampitz is survived by his wife Paula and their three children Zoë, Zaidan and Zachary. He has two adult daughters, Christina and Maria.
A tragic motorcycle crash occurred late Thursday afternoon in Berlin, killing a state police Chaplain, according to Connecticut State Police.
State police said Paul Krampitz, 65, of Cromwell, was riding a 2023 Harley Davidson motorbike northbound on Route 9 in the left lane near Exit 33.
According to state police, a 2006 Chevy Impala was driving in the right lane, just behind the Harley Davidson, when it departed its lane for unclear reasons and crashed with the motorcycle.
Krampitz was detached from the motorcycle and sustained life-threatening injuries.
He was transported to New Britain Hospital and later confirmed dead, according to state police.
Krampitz, a reverend, was appointed Chaplain of the Connecticut State Police in July 2008, according to state police.
Krampitz served as a Chaplain for more than 16 years, providing troopers with support, counsel, mentorship, and guidance.
He was very helpful during the Sandy Hook tragedy and dozens of Critical Incident Stress Management debriefings.
Krampitz also served as a chaplain for the Cromwell Police and Fire departments.
Firefighters describe Krampitz as “a friend, mentor, and source of strength for all of us.”
According to state police, the Chevy driver claimed he was uninjured and denied medical treatment.
State police are investigating the crash and urge anybody who witnessed it to contact Trooper Michael Dean #416 at Troop H at 860-534-1098 or by email at Michael.Dean@CT.gov.
They are also seeking anyone with dashcams who were around Exit 33 at the time of the crash to contact Dean.
