Dr Aaron Edwards explains why he tweeted “homosexuality is invading the Church”, a post that saw him fired from his job.

According to a tribunal, a Christian lecturer was fired from a Bible college after saying that homosexuality had “invaded” the church.
Dr. Aaron Edwards lost his employment at Cliff College in Derbyshire, UK after making a social media post in February last year.
The evangelical Christian and father of 6 posted:
“Homosexuality is invading the Church. Evangelicals no longer see the severity of this because they’re busy apologising for their apparently barbaric homophobia, whether or not it’s true.”
Cliff College suspended and fired the 39-year-old after an investigation.
On the second day of his Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, UK hearing, he told the court that the tweet was consistent with the views he had stated in blogs, podcasts, and sermons as a preacher.
He stated that the institution, where he had worked for 7 years, was also aware of his beliefs.
Dr. Edwards claimed the institute notified him that 3 young female students had complained about the post.
The court heard that 2 of the students were in a lesbian relationship, while the 3rd had survived the Ariana Grande Manchester Arena terror attack, making her more likely to be triggered by particular terms, such as “bomb”.
Dr. Edwards told the panel that his views on homosexuality within the church were well known, but that the college had provided no support following a backlash on social media.
He stated:
“I taught LGBT+ identifying students every year for seven years and have never had an accusation like that…my views on homosexuality have not been unknown, they have been discussed openly.”
“In seven years of teaching at Cliff, I have never had a student who took one of my units raise concerns about feeling unsafe in the classroom, and no student has ever left feedback showing concerns about the expression of my views on homosexuality.”
At the time of his post, the Church of England was debating whether to allow same-sex blessings in their churches.
He told the tribunal:
“The College had more than ample chance to become acquainted with my opinions and academic research for there to be less apparent shock and public displeasure on their part in responding as they did on Twitter without any prior contact with me.”
“I believe the public expression of my beliefs is academically defensible, but many institutions will likely be unable to look past the controversy of being dismissed as a result.”
Dr. Edwards accuses Cliff College of harassment, discrimination, and unfair dismissal.
He is seeking damages and compensation for his unjust firing, as well as reinstatement.
The hearing continues in Sheffield.
