CHRISTIAN BREAKING NEWS: What Happened at Washington County Public Schools in Virginia? FFBR Gets Prayer Display Removed from Cafeteria Wall Based on Complaint by a Parent

Washington County Public Schools in Virginia removed a prayer display after the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) filed a complaint letter on behalf of a parent.

The concerned High Point Elementary School parent alerted the state/church watchdog that the school publicly displayed the following prayer on the cafeteria wall:

“Lord, We thank you for this food. Bless it to the nourishment of our bodies and us to your service. Amen.”

The complainant further stated that biblical texts were on display in the main office in 2023.

“To protect students’ First Amendment rights, the district must remove this religious display from its cafeteria immediately, as well as any other religious displays it becomes aware of in its schools.”

– FFRF Staff Attorney Chris Line wrote to district Superintendent Keith Perrigan

FFRF pointed out that religion is a divisive influence in public schools.

The religious exhibit unnecessarily alienated students and families who are not Christian.

A whopping 37% of the American population is non-Christian, with nearly 30% identifying as nonreligious.

Furthermore, FFRF informed the district that at least 1/3rd of Generation Z (those born after 1996) do not practice religion, with a recent survey finding that nearly half of Gen Z are religiously unaffiliated “Nones.”

FFRF’s efforts to protect students’ rights paid dividends.

After receiving the letter, Perrigan emailed FFRF to advise it that:

“All reports were investigated and addressed appropriately.”

Following additional investigation, FFRF determined that the display had been removed.
