Dr. M.L. Curry
1975 — Present

This man of God has preached the word of God around the Dallas Metroplex area and as far as Africa for 44 years and counting. He has loved every minute and he continues to live today by the title of his first powerful sermon. “Here am I Lord, send me, I’ll go”

Being one of seven children born to the late Sylvester Lawrence Curry and Dorothy Mae Hill-Curry. Melvin Leon Curry is the second oldest child and the first of his two brothers to be called to preach the “Word of God”. He was born in the great city of “Big Sandy, Texas”. He is known for saying “Don’t go to heaven before you get a chance to visit “Big Sandy”. Growing up they did not have much, but there was one thing they had an abundance amount of and that was “Love”. With his strict upbringing, this gentleman modeled himself after his father. Picking up some unique qualities from his father made him the man he is today with character that shows what he stands for, values that he lives by, and the morals that make him the perfect leader.

Dr. Curry is a graduate of Fouke Hawkins High School. He Attended Dallas Baptist University and received his honorary doctorate from the Southern Bible Institute. He announced his call into the ministry in November 1974. In January 1975, Dr. Reverend M. L. Curry was called to serve as Pastor of the New St. Paul M.B.C. Once he became Pastor the church quickly experienced tremendsous growth. Many people were saved and numerous lives were being changed. In 1991, echoes rang out from all over town when it was made known that the then Mayor, Annette Strauss was publically recognizing this man of God for giving himself so unselfishly for the West Dallas Community.

Dr. Curry worked diligently to improve living conditions for the homeless by pursuing efforts to persuade the city officials to permit the homeless to live in some of the government owned housing units that were boarded up. Through his efforts which included some non-violence marching in the streets of the West Dallas Community and hosting meetings in the Mayor’s Office. The then Mayor Steve Barlett, cast his signature on documents passed down by Washington, D.C. HUD Office. This allocated some $116 Million for the revitalization of housing in the West Dallas Community. All of which was possible due to Dr. Curry’s persistence to make a difference for those that deserved it. During the George H.W. Bush Presidential Administration, Dr. Curry was invited to Washington, D.C. for the signing and initiation of the Affordable Housing Act of 1992.

Dr. Curry has served as the President of the West Dallas Interdenominational Minister Alliance for over 25 years, whose purpose is to create a new direction for religious leaders and the community by providing a forum for members to identify problems and develop or share in solutions to cure the targeted problems. During his presidency, the DWIMA organized Dallas West General Construction Company, this company employed approximately 30 people and focused completing repairs on homes of the elderly and disabled seniors.
