Donald Trump is not yet president, but fears about what he might do on his first day in office have prompted a small but politically active Pilsen church to go virtual, beginning with last week’s Christmas service.
It is a promise that President-elect Trump made repeatedly during his campaign.
“On day one, I will launch the largest deportations of criminal program in American History.”

That pledge, to deport the more than 11 million individuals who live in this country illegally, prompted Pilsen’s Lincoln United Methodist Church to make the difficult choice to shift its Spanish-language services online, beginning this past Christmas Day.
Pastor Emma Lozano is with Lincoln United Methodist Church.
For many years, it has been US policy to prohibit immigration agents from making arrests inside schools, hospitals, and churches.
That stance propelled the little Pilsen church into the national spotlight in 2006, when it provided shelter to Elvira Arellano, an immigrant residing in the United States without legal authority and facing deportation.
That attention makes Lozano concerned about what would happen if that policy is eliminated, as has been widely assumed, once Trump becomes office.
It is that spotlight that makes Lozano fearful of what may happen if that policy is, as has been widely speculated, removed once Trump takes office.
Almost half of the congregation lives in the United States without legal permission.
It’s not just religious ceremonies that are becoming virtual.
This church provides legal aid to its members following each week’s Spanish-language service.
That, too, will be moving online for the foreseeable future.
