I’ll tell you what happened, and you’ll never hear it from me a second time, because it’s too painful to tell.
In his first speech after almost escaping an assassination attempt, Donald Trump assured supporters that he had “God on his side.”
At the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, the party’s presidential nominee described the attack that resulted in his being shot in the ear at a Pennsylvania rally last Saturday.
The 78-year-old former president stated that the bullet “came within a quarter of an inch of taking my life”.
With a bandaged ear, he told the rapt crowd, “I’ll tell you what happened, and you’ll never hear it from me a second time, because it’s too painful.”
Trump remembers being at the platform in Butler and turning to look at a screen that displayed a chart.
“I heard a loud whizzing sound and felt something hit me really, really hard on my right ear,
“I said to myself, ‘Wow, what was that? It can only be a bullet’, and moved my right hand to my ear, brought it down, and my hand was covered with blood.
“I immediately knew it was very serious, that we were under attack, and in one movement, proceeded to drop to the ground.”

With images of Trump bloodied on screens behind him:
“Bullets continued to fly as very brave Secret Service agents rushed to the stage and pounced on top of me for protection.
“There was blood pouring everywhere, and yet, in a certain way I felt very safe because I had God on my side.
“The amazing thing is that prior to the shot, if I had not moved my head at the very last instant, the assassin’s bullet would have perfectly hit its mark, and I would not be here tonight.”
When he told the Milwaukee crowd he was “not supposed to be here,” the delegates responded with a shout of, “Yes you are.”
Trump also kissed the fire helmet of Corey Comperatore, a volunteer fireman slain in the shooting.
Trump’s 90-minute speech, the longest in convention history, concluded a 4-day event in which he was hailed with enthusiasm by party members.
Initially, he struck an uncharacteristically conciliatory tone when accepting the Republican presidential nomination for the November 5 election.
In a notable departure from his usual belligerent approach, he said:
“I am running to be president for all of America, not half of America, because there is no victory in winning for half of America.”“I could stop wars with a telephone call.”

As he concluded, his family and those of his running mate, Senator JD Vance, entered the stage as balloons dropped from the ceiling.
Among them was Trump’s wife Melania, who is rarely seen on campaign trails.
Meanwhile, Biden faced increasing pressure to drop out of the presidential race.
The 81-year-old is quarantined at his Delaware home after getting COVID-19.
His doctor stated that he was experiencing mild symptoms.
