Justin Welby, the 105th Archbishop, resigned in January 2025 after a damning report on the Church’s handling of child abuse. His departure left a leadership vacuum at the heart of the Church of England. Now, the Crown Nominations Commission, a 20-member body chaired by former MI5 chief Lord Jonathan Evans, is tasked with choosing a new Archbishop who can guide the Church in a time of crisis and change.

This decision isn’t only national—it reverberates across the global Anglican Communion. Issues like the ordination of women, the blessing of same-sex relationships, and differing theological interpretations have created tensions worldwide. Every choice sends a signal to millions of Anglicans, clergy, and Christians around the globe.
