Dr. Tony Evans publicly acknowledged a moral failure in June 2024. While he clarified that no crime was committed, he admitted he had not exercised righteous judgment. In response, he submitted to a comprehensive restoration process established by the Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship elders. This process included counseling with outside professionals, pastoral mentoring, evidence of genuine repentance and humility, and a full 12-month absence from pulpit ministry.
The church emphasized that the heart of biblical discipline is restoration, not punishment. Through accountability, prayer, and guidance, Dr. Evans demonstrated genuine sorrow and a renewed desire to honor God. In alignment with biblical principles and the unanimous affirmation of the elder board, he successfully completed this restoration journey.
While Dr. Evans will not return to a leadership or staff role at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship, this decision protects the integrity of the church while still honoring the genuine restoration of his faith and character through God’s grace. The elders celebrated his spiritual renewal and highlighted his ongoing potential to minister outside of formal leadership.
Looking forward, Jonathan Evans, his son, has been appointed as an elder and is expected to be formally installed as the lead pastor. Vision Sunday is scheduled for October 12, 2025, and will include worship, Pastor Jonathan Evans’ message, and the unveiling of the church’s renewed vision, reflecting its continued commitment to discipleship, spiritual growth, and global impact.
As part of the restoration celebration, the elders invited the congregation to pray for Dr. Evans, invoking Psalms 147:3, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds,” and Galatians 6:9, “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” The service highlighted how God’s grace works through accountability, prayer, and guidance to bring genuine restoration, healing broken relationships and renewing trust within the church.
During the service, communion was observed as a reminder that Christ’s sacrifice brings ongoing restoration and renewal. The bread and the blood symbolized the redemption available to all, reinforcing the message that even when leaders stumble, God’s grace can restore them spiritually and prepare them for continued Kingdom work outside formal positions of authority.
