Fuad Shukr: the man who killed 12 children in a soccer field on Saturday and is responsible of 30 years of Hezbollah terrorist attacks.
The Israel Defense Forces struck a building in southern Beirut on Tuesday evening, killing the Hezbollah terror group’s most senior military leader, whom Israel blamed for Saturday’s deadly rocket strike on Majdal Shams.
Fuad Shukr, Hezbollah’s most senior military commander and right-hand man to terror leader Hassan Nasrallah, was killed in the strike, which ripped a massive hole in the side of an 8-story apartment building in southern Beirut, the IDF reported late Tuesday.
The strike came after days of intense diplomacy aimed at limiting Israel’s response to a rocket strike on a Golan Heights soccer field Saturday that killed 12 children, amid concerns that Israel’s retaliation would escalate tensions into all-out war.
Hezbollah did not immediately confirm Shukr’s killing, and the Israeli military said it did not intend to provide special instructions for civilians to seek shelter, as is commonly done when the country anticipates retaliation from a regional neighbor, but warned Israelis to remain vigilant.
Around 7:40 PM Israel time, Israel launched a hit in Dahieh, a suburb south of Beirut and a stronghold of the Iran-backed Lebanese terror group.
Residents reported hearing a loud blast, followed by a column of smoke rising over the neighborhood.
Lebanon’s health ministry reported that 3 people were killed, including 2 children, and 74 were injured in the strike.
The Israeli military claimed responsibility for the strike, saying Shukr was killed in the attack.
The Israeli military took credit for the strike, saying Shukr had been killed in the attack.
The IDF stated that Shukr, also known as Hajj Mohsin, was responsible for the Saturday Majdal Shams strike, as well as prior deadly attacks on Israel.
According to the military, Shukr has been managing Hezbollah’s nearly daily attacks against Israel since Hamas’ invasion in southern Israel on October 7.
Shukr served on Hezbollah’s senior military council, the Jihad Council, and led its strategic division, according to the military.
He was named by the IDF several years ago as the commander of Hezbollah’s precision missile project.
He is also wanted by the United States for his role in the 1983 bombing of a US Marine barracks in Beirut, and Washington has placed a $5 million bounty on his death.
According to the State Department, Shukr played a “central role” in the bombing of the US Marine Corps barracks in 1983, which killed 241 US Marines.
According to the State Department, during the Syrian civil war, he “aided [Hezbollah] fighters and pro-Syrian regime troops” in their campaign against anti-Assad forces.
Hezbollah did not immediately confirm Shukr’s death, and some early media reports suggested that he had survived the attack.
According to Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency, the Israeli strike targeted the area surrounding Hezbollah’s Shura Council in the Haret Hreik district of Beirut’s Dahieh suburb.
According to the source, the strike was carried out using a drone that shot 3 rockets.
It was Israel’s first attack on the Lebanese capital since a January strike that killed Hamas’ deputy commander overseas, Saleh al-Arouri.
The strike came after Israeli leaders vowed a stern retaliation to the Hezbollah missile attack that killed 12 children playing on a soccer field and playground in Majdal Shams, a Druze hamlet in the Golan Heights.
Despite concerns of a Hezbollah onslaught, the IDF announced shortly after midnight that the Home Front Command parameters for Israeli citizens would not be changed immediately.
Shortly after the strike, US State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel told a press briefing that
“we’re continuing to work toward a diplomatic resolution that would allow Israeli and Lebanese civilians to return to their homes and live in peace and security. We certainly want to avoid any kind of escalation.”
Patel emphasized the US’s “ironclad” support for Israel, stating that
“Israel has every right to defend itself” and “certainly faces threats like no other country does in that region of the world.”
According to the Russian state-run TASS news agency, the Russian foreign ministry described Israel’s strike on Beirut as “a flagrant violation of international law.”
Since October 8, Hezbollah-led fighters have attacked Israeli communities and military posts along the border almost daily, claiming they are doing so to support Gaza throughout the war.
