An evangelist who had received death threats from Muslim extremists was killed on June 17 in eastern Uganda after leading Muslims and others to Christ, according to sources.

Evangelist Richard Malinga’s body was fund in the evening at Kayete Swamp in Akisim A village, Butebo District, after texting his pastor that he was besieged by Muslims, according to sources.

He was 36.

According to his pastor, he was sent by a Baptist church in Pallisa District to visit houses and preach the gospel.

He left his birthplace of Pallisa District on the morning of June 17 to share about Christ in Butebo District, and several people, including some radical Muslims, received Christ, according to his church’s senior pastor.

The pastor reported that Malinga had received threatening messages from Muslim extremists in Budaka, Kadama, Butebo, and Pallisa.

Searching for his identification, he and others found Malinga’s phone and messages from the pastor, whom they subsequently contacted.

The pastor alerted Butebo District police, who arrived on the spot with the resident and transported Malinga’s body to a Butebo District mortuary.

The police launched a manhunt the next day.

The police have initiated a murder case, file No. CRB 178/2024.

The Ugandan constitution and other legislation guarantee religious freedom, including the right to propagate one’s faith and convert to another.

Muslims account up barely more than 12% of Uganda’s population, with the majority concentrated in the country’s east.
