A man arrested on suspicion of murdering Belfast resident John George was hauled to court in handcuffs today.

The 32-year-old sneered as he was led inside the courthouse in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, by 2 armed officers.

He was appearing before an investigating judge in a behind-closed-doors hearing, with a decision expected later today on whether he will be remanded in custody pending an ongoing criminal probe or released on bail.

His court appearance came 3 days after his detention, on the same day that Mr George’s body was discovered hidden among lemon trees in an orchard off the main route between Rojales and Torrevieja.

Police used nearly all of the 72 hours allowed by Spanish law to hold him in custody.

All initial hearings in Spain are held in private, with only trials available to the press and public.

Police have not publicly identified the bearded suspect, who is from the Czech Republic, and are unlikely to do so even if he is committed to a local jail while being investigated for John’s homicide.

Any official charges would be filed at a later stage of the court investigation, which is expected to take several months to complete.

Court officials are expected to provide an update later today on the outcome of the appearance.
