100 Muslims arrested for attacking 2 Christian men on allegations of desecrating Quran in Pakistan
More than 100 Muslim men were arrested and charged under anti-terrorism laws in eastern Pakistan on Monday after allegedly beating a Christian father and son over charges that they desecrated pages of Islam’s holy book.
The mob went on a rampage Saturday, after people reported seeing burned Quran pages outside the 2 Christian men’s house and accused the son of being behind it, setting fire to their house and shoemaking firm in Sargodha, Punjab province, said senior police officer Assad Ijaz Malhi.
They also attacked the son.
According to Malhi, police rescued the 2 wounded men and transferred them to a hospital where they are in stable condition, and at least 100 persons were arrested as a result of various police raids.
Authorities were looking for individuals who could have been involved in the attack, he said.
According to residents and the police, the fire completely destroyed the factory and sections of the house.
Punjab police said they have increased protection at churches.
Police provided information of the incident in a statement on Monday, saying police received a distress call from Sargodha city notifying them that a member of a Christian community had desecrated the Quran and a mob had besieged his home, threatening him and his family.
The district police chief and others arrived at Mujahid Colony, where the incident occurred, and “the situation was highly volatile, with the mob demanding that the alleged blasphemer be handed over to them to face their wrath,” according to the statement.
Police rescued 10 Christians who had been surrounded by a mob and brought them to a safe area, according to the report.
Several officers were injured while rescuing the accused and his family, police added.
Malhi stated that investigations were ongoing to determine the extent of the damage.
Blasphemy charges are prevalent in Pakistan, and under the country’s blasphemy laws, anyone found guilty of insulting Islam or Islamic religious figures faces the death penalty.
While no one has been executed on such charges, even an accusation can spark riots and provoke mobs to violence, lynchings, and murders.
