Israeli troops clashed with Palestinian gunmen across the Gaza Strip on Saturday, including in Rafah, a day after the International Court of Justice (ICCCordered Israel to halt operations in the enclave’s southernmost city, which risked devastating the civilian population.
According to an Israel Defense Forces statement, a cell in Rafah that opened fire on forces was killed, and multiple tunnel shafts, as well as weapons stores, were discovered and destroyed.
The combat erupted after Palestinian media reported a huge Israeli airstrike in Rafah’s Shaboura region on Friday evening, one of the neighborhoods located roughly halfway between the Israeli border and the seashore where the IDF began operating against Hamas earlier this week.
The IDF operation in Rafah, which the military claims is Hamas’ last major stronghold, has fueled further international criticism of Israel’s war in Gaza, with the ICJ issuing a significant but somewhat ambiguous ruling ordering Israel to cease military activities that could result in the destruction of the civilian population sheltering there.
Israeli authorities said they view the ICJ judgment to allow for limited operations in Rafah, denying claims that the court ruling obliged Israel to cease the onslaught entirely.
“What they are asking us is not to commit genocide in Rafah. We did not commit genocide and we will not commit genocide.”

When asked if the Rafah attack would continue, Hanegbi stated:
“According to international law, we have the right to defend ourselves and the evidence is that the court is not preventing us from continuing to defend ourselves.”
