Recognizing a Palestinian State after October 7 means rewarding Hamas for murdering over 1,000 Israelis.
It means giving a prize to the Iranian Regime.
It means living with the possibility of another October 7.
The only way to promote peace is through direct negotiations, within the framework of a regional normalization process.
While the UNGA cannot formally confer UN membership, the vote may provide Palestinians similar rights.
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is expected to upgrade Palestine’s standing at the UN, granting it nearly all statehood rights within its plenum but not voting.
The United Arab Emirates is set to file a resolution, a draft of which was seen by The Jerusalem Post, urging the United Nations Security Council to grant Palestine full membership status in the UN.
The language, which is likely to receive widespread support, reads that “Palestine is qualified for membership in the United Nations in accordance with Article 4 of the Charter and should therefore be admitted to membership in the United Nations.”
Following the United States’ veto of its membership application to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) last month, the Palestinian Authority turned to the General Assembly via the UAE.
The United States is 1 of the 5 permanent UNSC members with veto power.
The UAE resolution “recommends” that the Security Council “reconsider the matter favorably,” yet its phrasing essentially aims to circumvent the UNSC’s only authority to choose UN membership.
UNGA resolutions, on the other hand, cannot be vetoed, and the PA enjoys automatic majority support in the UNGA, where over 140 members have officially recognized Palestine as a state.
The UNGA lacks the formal authority to grant Palestinians UN membership, but it can provide them with de facto recognition, allowing them to function as a state within the UN system.
In 2012, the UN General Assembly voted 138-9 to grant Palestine the status of non-member observer state.
This move enables them to participate in UN forums and sign numerous legislation and treaties, notably the Rome State, which governs the International Criminal Court.
According to the current draft of the resolution, the UNGA will grant Palestine the authority to operate within its plenum as a member state on Friday, allowing it practically everything except the power to vote, which requires UNSC approval.
The resolution reiterates “the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, including the right to their independent State of Palestine.”
In effect, the State of Palestine might be seated among the member states, with full rights to address the plenum on its or other parties’ behalf.
Palestinians could present resolutions, proposals, and amendments on their own or on behalf of UN-affiliated parties.
If the resolution is approved, Palestinians will be able to participate in high-level meetings and international conferences with voting rights.
Western countries, particularly the United States, have rejected unilateral recognition of Palestinian statehood, saying that it should only be provided after the two countries reach a final status peace agreement.
Given that negotiations for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict have been stalled for a decade, especially in light of the Gaza war, Western powers are increasingly advocating for unilateral Palestinian statehood.
Israel’s government has opposed Palestinian statehood, although it acknowledged that such independence could only be attained through a negotiated process.
It has contended that Palestinian recognition, following the Hamas onslaught on southern Israel, which murdered over 1,200 people and kidnapped another 252 as captives, was a reward for terror.
