Riverstone Academy, located in southern Colorado, opened quietly this August. Calling itself the state’s first public Christian school, it offers K–5 students a bold new path: classical academics blended with hands-on learning, trade skills, and a Christian foundation.
The school is authorized by Education ReEnvisioned BOCES, a state-approved nonprofit that oversees charter-like contract schools. Its leaders say this is a historic moment for Christian education — but not everyone agrees.

The Colorado Department of Education has raised serious concerns. Should a school teaching from a Christian perspective receive public funding? Type FUND if you think yes, or STOP if you think public funds should not support religious instruction.

In a letter to the authorizing board, the state warned that Riverstone Academy may violate the Colorado Constitution, which requires public schools to be nonsectarian. Funding could be withheld unless the school aligns with state law.
But the authorizers fired back, insisting that denying funding would be unconstitutional and discriminatory. Executive Director Ken Witt said the BOCES board was fully aware of the school’s Christian affiliation when approving it in August.
This situation echoes the 2024 Supreme Court deadlock that blocked the nation’s first religious charter school in Oklahoma, leaving the legal status of public Christian schools uncertain nationwide. The story is far from over — and the debate over faith, funding, and education is heating up.

Now it’s your turn: Should public Christian schools be fully funded by taxpayers? Type FAITH if you support funding, or STATE if you think public funding should remain secular. Your comment could spark a nationwide conversation — and we’ll highlight your thoughts in the pinned section below!
