Pastor Zhang Shaojie, the courageous leader of Nanle County Christian Church in Henan, China, has been released after serving a full 12-year prison sentence. Arrested in November 2013, Zhang faced charges of “fraud” and “gathering a crowd to disrupt social order,” widely criticized by human rights organizations as politically motivated.
During his imprisonment, reports reveal he endured severe conditions: sleep deprivation, poor nutrition, and mental strain. His health suffered greatly, and his family feared for his life. Despite this, Zhang held steadfast to his faith, becoming a symbol of Christian endurance and resilience.
Upon release on November 16, 2025, Pastor Zhang returned home, but his freedom is far from complete.
Authorities have installed facial-recognition cameras around his home, and visits are restricted, a stark reminder that Christian faith remains under heavy scrutiny in China.
