CHRISTIAN BREAKING NEWS: 🙏 Church of Nigeria BREAKS from Church of England Over Scripture and Faith
In October 2025, the Church of Nigeria made a historic declaration: it will no longer recognize the leadership of the Church of England or the Archbishop of Canterbury. First, the Appointment of Archbishop Sarah Mullally
On October 3, 2025, the Church of England announced Bishop Sarah Mullally as the next Archbishop of Canterbury — the first woman to hold this historic role. She has also been a vocal supporter of same-sex marriage and the blessing of homosexual couples. While many celebrated this milestone as progress, conservative leaders, especially across Africa, sounded the alarm.
The Church of Nigeria immediately expressed deep concern. They described Mullally’s appointment as “devastating” and “insensitive” to the convictions of Anglicans who cannot accept female headship in the episcopate. Her public support for same-sex marriage was seen as conflicting with biblical teaching, prompting the Nigerian Church to reaffirm its commitment to Scripture and traditional Christian beliefs.
Next, the Church of Nigeria Response
On October 6, 2025, Archbishop Henry Ndukuba, the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, issued a formal statement condemning the appointment as further proof that the Church of England had moved away from biblical orthodoxy.
He emphasized that the Church of Nigeria, as part of the GAFCON family, would continue to uphold the authority of Scripture, the historic creeds, evangelism, and holy Christian living. Archbishop Ndukuba called on faithful Christians within the Church of England and across the world to remain steadfast in defending God’s Word, resisting teachings they believe undermine biblical truth.
He made it clear: this is not merely about one leader — it’s a fundamental question of whether Scripture or modern cultural trends guide the Church.
Finally, the Global Implications
The Church of Nigeria’s declaration has reignited discussions throughout the Anglican Communion. Supporters praise it as a courageous stand for biblical fidelity, while critics warn it could deepen divisions in an already fragmented global Church.
This bold move underscores a clash between biblical conviction and institutional authority. It raises urgent questions for Christians everywhere: How far should one go to uphold God’s Word? Can the Church remain united when Scripture and modern policies collide?

MONDAY, 6TH OCTOBER, 2025.
RESPONSE OF THE CHURCH OF NIGERIA TO THE ELECTION OF NEW
ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY- THE RT REV. SARAH MULLALLY.
The news of the appointment of Bishop Sarah Mullally on Friday, 3rd October, 2025 as the next Archbishop of Canterbury is a devastating one that ignores the current situation and challenges being faced by the
Anglican Communion.
It is a double jeopardy; first, in its insensitivity to the conviction of the majority of Anglicans who are unable to embrace female headship in the episcopate, and second, more disturbing that Bishop Sarah Mullally is a
strong supporter of same-sex marriage as evidenced in her speech in 2023, after a vote to approve the blessings of homosexuals when she described the result as a “moment of hope for the Church. ” It remains to be seen how the same person hopes to mend the already torn fabric of the Anglican
Communion by the contentious same-sex marriage, which has caused an enormous crisis across the entire Anglican Communion for over two decades.
This election is a further confirmation that the global Anglican world could no longer accept the leadership of the Church of England and that of the Archbishop of Canterbury.
On our part, as a member of the GAFCON family, the Church of Nigeria affirms, the GAFCON position unreservedly, and reaffirm
our earlier stance to uphold the authority of the Scriptures, our historic creeds, evangelism and holy Christian living, irrespective of the ongoing revisionist agenda, believing our Lord Jesus Christ has built His church and “the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16 :18).
We encourage all faithful brothers and sisters in the Church of England who have consistently rejected the aberration called same-sex marriage and other ungodly teachings, by contending for the faith that was once delivered to the saints (Jude 1:3).
May the Spirit of the Good Shepherd continue to guide His Church. Amen.
The Most Rev’d Henry C. Ndukuba, MA, BD, MA (Ed.), DD.
Archbishop, Metropolitan and Primate of the Church of Nigeria
