U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa: University of Iowa cannot reject the status of the Christian student group, Business Leaders in Christ as a registered student organization

The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 ruled that the University of Iowa cannot strip a Christian group of its status as a registered student organization based on its requirement that leaders follow its statement of faith, which includes not having sex outside of a marriage between a man and a woman.

The dispute started in 2016 after a gay student asked Business Leaders in Christ’s then-president, Hannah Thompson, about becoming vice president of the group. The unidentified gay student did not receive his position due to his “desire to pursue a homosexual lifestyle/relationship.”

Judge Stephanie M. Rose granted a permanent injunction that will keep the University of Iowa from rejecting the status of Business Leaders in Christ.

According to Rose, the university unevenly applies the policy and still allows other groups to limit access to leadership or membership based on their religious views, race, sex and other protected characteristics.
