The Southern Baptist Convention’s highest administrative council decided Tuesday to remove 4 congregations:
1 for having a woman as senior pastor,
2 for failing to follow the denomination’s sexual-abuse policy, and
1 for a lack of financial contribution
The decision was made by the SBC Executive Committee during a closed-door session at the conclusion of its 2-day conference in Nashville, Tennessee.
These are the latest in a string of expulsions in recent years, including one of its largest, California’s Saddleback Church, and a congregation in Louisville, Kentucky, for having women in ministry leadership positions.
On Tuesday, the committee ousted Immanuel Baptist Church of Paducah, Kentucky, whose senior minister, is a woman, Katie McKown.
According to the SBC’s formal declaration of faith, only men can hold the position of pastor.
Because each Southern Baptist church is self-governing, the denomination cannot dictate what they should do.
However, it can decide whether churches can become members or be expelled.
The committee ousted Grove Road Baptist Church in Greenville, South Carolina, for allegedly demonstrating a “lack of intent to cooperate in resolving a concern regarding the pastor’s mishandling of an allegation of sexual abuse.”
It also expelled West Hendersonville Baptist Church in Hendersonville, North Carolina, for allegedly failing to comply with the denomination’s sexual abuse policies by employing a “biblically disqualified” pastor.
Jerry Mullinax, the pastor, was disciplined in 2003 after teaching at a middle school and allegedly sending “improper emails” to a female student, according to news reports.
Mullinax lost his teaching license after the North Carolina Board of Education canceled it in 2004.
The fourth church, New Hope Baptist of Gastonia, North Carolina, did not participate financially in the convention and showed no willingness “to resolve a question of faith and practice,” the committee stated without more explanation.
The churches — Immanuel Baptist Church in Paducah, Kentucky; Grove Road Baptist Church in Greenville, South Carolina; West Hendersonville Baptist Church in Hendersonville, North Carolina; and New Hope Baptist Church in Gastonia, North Carolina — are among 14 others disfellowshipped by the nation’s largest Protestant denomination since the reformulation of an SBC group to review reports against churches.
Recommendations from the SBC panel, known as the SBC Credentials Committee, have resulted in the removal of 6 churches for abuse-related allegations, as well as 6 churches with a woman as senior or lead pastor.
The data highlight the growing dispute in the SBC about the role of women pastors and the denomination’s reaction to clergy abuse, an issue that sparked the credentials committee’s reform 5 years ago.
Churches have the ability to appeal to the SBC’s entire annual meeting in Indianapolis in June.
The conservative organization has already expelled congregations for taking pro-LGBTQ+ statements and allowing women in ministry.
It has also dismissed congregations for alleged racism and inability to handle abuse, an issue that the church has long been pressured to confront.
